Seriously, why Macs?
Someone tell me why it is worth spending THAT much money on a Mac? Seriously.
I go back and forth about it all the time, but I’m not sure I can justify spending that kind of money simply because with all other factors equal, it’s “cooler” than a PC.
I’m not trying to pick a fight, I just really want to know. So tell me, why do you have (or not have) a Mac?
(For now, I'm double-posting here and on Wordpress. Click the link to see the other site.)

You have both Mac lovers and PC lovers. It's really a matter of taste and preference.
I don't see the point of it personally. I have heard from my photographer and designer friends that the programs they use for it are better, but even that is debatable. Personally I am thankful to have a computer at all. :)
I currently don't use Macs simply because they cost more.
Because my Mac does everything I want to intuitively and wtih complaint or complication. Everything, dwn to the tiniest feature has been thought out with the user in mind. And if I can't work out something, someone has always thought it through, and provided a solution. And it has never crashed once in 2 and a bit years.
i have both mac and pc ... i like doing media stuff on my mac. my pc can be used for anything else ... they are both great in my opinion. and both have their quirks.
btw .. i subbed your rss feed and it's in my google reader! I hope I can keep up, here is just more convenient for some reason.
@shanella@revelife - yay thanks for subbing! i know what u mean about the convenience, but i think i read more non-xanga blogs now. xanga feels a little cluttered to me these days. i'll sub you in my rss feed though ;)
People who actually get work done use whatever platform works for them.
It's as simple as that. I've converted a few dozen people over to Macs so people automatically assume I will recommend a Mac. However, I first ask, what the heck do you want to do with said computer.
Sometimes the PC makes sense, sometimes the Mac makes sense. WHOA! =P
I custom build PC's and also have a Macbook Pro and use a Mac at work, so I feel I'm rather qualified to talk on this. I've argued the merits of Mac vs PC forever so I always say bring it on.
The thing that people don't get is, when you buy a Mac, it is NOT for the hardware as much as IT IS for the software.
OS X, equivalent of Windows is a stroke of genius and anyone who has spent anytime with it can tell right away it is light years ahead of Windows in terms of usability.
Now is it for everyone?
No.
Macs are great but it's foolish to argue which is better when it really matters, which is better for YOU.
@ijuswannalol - ooh, good answer ken! yeah i gotta think about this further.
I just bought a Macbook for J-dogg. I'm not impressed at all. Mostly a gimmick to get girls to buy their computers.
i got the macbook pro before i left for gradschool and to be honest compatibility was an issue with some of the programs we used... but its so sleek and sexy i could not resist.
um the mac can run both the Mac OS, Unix, Microsoft's OS versions NT, Vista and a server all at the same time!!! Trust me I didn't believe it till I saw our Mac advisor/maintenance guy do it. The computer didn't flinch or sputter or smoke.
I'd like to see a pc do that! btw it's the new Mac Book Pro. Also if you're a Vista fan, it runs it the fastest, even better than a PC. Plus you can run all your Microsoft apps quicker.
Lomo...no mo you may run the Mac on PC platform and I don't think you would have that many issues at all.
IjustwannaLol...um macs can do what pc's do now with the new mac book pro...I think better and faster when running windows =)
plus what people think is a pricey mac isn't because to get a PC to be the same speed as the Mac, you'd spend more...you get it all in one with out piecemealing the computer.
Also I forgot to mention the stability of the Macs are much better, I've used pc's and keep getting these dang crashes that get me irked and mad.
I prefer PC, although I use a Mac at work (not by choice).
PC: Cost less. Viruses. More customizations, plugins, programs. Many online solutions for tech-saavy. When weird things happen, try to pinpoint using Safe Mode. Good for programmers. Can do all the art Mac does, people say Mac has prettier colors, but you can always customize or change the monitor anyway. Hard to use for the non-tech people. Considered the "evil empire."
Mac: Cost more. No virus. Less customizations, less programs. Not much self-help solutions, you may have to take it to the store. When weird things happen, take it to the store. Most programmers scoff at it. Supposedly good for art (as an artist who uses a lot of plugins and programs, I scoff at that idea) and has better color. Very easy to use. Considered "cool and hip."
It's like Ipod. It cost more, but given the lack of functions, I have no idea why. Must be marketing. Anyways, competition is healthy for the economy and general quality, so I applaud those who buy Macs. BTW, no one should bother running PC on a Mac. It's a bother just to start the program that runs the PC and it's pretty slow.
@d_art -
dude, the Mac can run windows if you havn't heard and also is a unix box beneath the easy to use UI that Vista totally took and try to revamp unsuccessfully so, regarding for programmers, I think majority would agree they would like unix over windows spaghetti programming.
You say you can change colors and customize the monitor to be like more color calibrated, I have yet to find a pc that can display and do in graphics as much as a mac can do for colors. Ok so kungfu panda and other dreamworks projects are done on an HP, but HPs and other PC's can't do what a mac does...Like I previously mentioned, run 4 OS on the same machine concurrently while running other programs...don't think a pc can do that. For computing power dollar for dollar, to upgrade and make a PC out perform a Mac, it will cost more, and even to keep up with a Mac, it will cost more.Um regarding the comment about running Windows on a Mac, what version software and program are you using to start up to run the windows environment? When I checked and self tested, it booted faster than a PC.
Not picking a fight, but looking at hard facts I did while checking things out about laptops and desktops. Yes I'm a creative and Mac user, but I know that PC side of programming for web is supported more and was considering a PC laptop because of pricepoint, but after researching more on functionality and cost, the Mac wins hands down. BTW don't you read articles in various PC based mags? They also agree with the power of the Mac Book Pro and the Mac Book, not talking last gen, bu then latest.
@pch_driver - Hey, you love your Mac. It's cool, dude. Mac doesn't support 3D Studio Max, which is what I use for work, so I have to use VMWare (Bootcamp is lame b/c you have to reboot the whole computer) so I can move files from Mac (where I use to Photoshop) to PC directly. Not very intuitive and slow as molasses. Let's face it, only good PC applications you can run on Mac are card games. As for doing art on Mac over a PC, it's all just elist B.S. I go to where the tools are. Mac to PC is like PS3 to XBox360. There's simply more things for Xbox360 and cheaper.
I use vista on my mac, I just added more ram to make it run faster =p I'm too old to be converted into mac program.. well haven't actually used a mac since high skl. But I realli like the look of mac, I think the graphics is awesome!
I have been protesting macs for a long time because it is a weird creepy brainwashing cult of "i think i am too cool for you" obsessives.
But I have hated my last two dell's so much.. I think I am going to get a mac next time just to spite them. Actually have wanted to throw my dell out the window since the first WEEK I had it. It is twice as "fast" as my last computer and crashes about once a day, and is TEN TIMES SLOWER than any computer I have ever owned (stupid vista).
I am going to be the first one moving into the mac cult not out of joy at it's sexiness, but out of complete begrudgingness yet sheer ANGER with my pc.
Why can't you run parallels? Some apps run better on parallel than VMware. 3d studio max huh, well rendering on the PC side of the mac should be faster...Check out the bench marks on the latest boxes. Just my research. I need to find them, but I did read benchmarks and usually they don't lie unless the people are running the test are biased to particular hardware. I agree about boot camp...that can take the boot for all I care. regarding the dragging of files between PC and Mac side it shouldn't be that slow, not sure why, but I personally seen large I mean gig files flow over quickly.
hehe this is almost the battle of Coke vs Pepsi :P hehehe
haemin, you started a flame war. sometimes i feel like Mac owners become rabid defensive fanboys to justify their seemingly opulent purchase.
